6 Keys to the Perfect Luxury Home Design
Last updated on October 29th, 2024
We sat down with Lisa Kells, Partner and VP of Design at CDC Designs, to discuss the elements and features that make homes feel truly luxurious. Read through her tips and let us know in the comments which detail you’d most like to incorporate into your luxury home design.
Make a Great First Impression
A statement entry sets the tone for the interior of any home. “We always start with studying the architectural elements of the entry, and then set out to build upon those by embellishing with details such as paneling, specialty lighting, and upgraded railing features,” Kells explains. “Volume and natural light opportunities are something we always incorporate and encourage, as they bring a sense of openness and brightness to the space.”
The Kitchen Is the Heart of the Home
The kitchen is the epicenter of the home and therefore is the perfect place to inspire with beautiful cabinetry, countertops, and flooring materials. “One trend that we see continuing is the ‘mix and match’ look,” Kells shares. “Whether it’s two different cabinet colors or two different countertop materials, it allows for the kitchen to be customized and creates a special and unique design for the buyer.”
Entertainment Rooms That Engage
Media rooms and dedicated home theaters have evolved over the years into spaces that can accommodate multiple functions tailored to the buyer’s preferences. “These rooms have become a place for a more social experience,” explains Kells. “Whether you are watching a movie, playing games, or entertaining friends, there should be several places for conversation to occur. Comfortable seating, large screen sizes, and gaming elements are all important considerations for these rooms.”
Relax in Style
A spa-like bathroom provides a tranquil retreat that promotes good health and well-being while reducing stress. “We take our cues from the finest luxury hotels and spas, combining timeless and sophisticated materials to create a soothing environment,” Kells shares. “Seamless glass showers, free-standing bathtubs, rain showerheads, and sleek vanities make for a serene and stylish sanctuary.”
Specialty Lighting
Lighting is an essential ingredient for designing luxury homes. “We look for opportunities in key rooms for hanging fixtures that are not only beautiful but also provide ambient lighting and overall light to a room,” Kells explains. “Additional accent lighting brings added visual interest to a room by creating different focal points and can highlight specific objects like art and bookcases. Recessed linear lighting and under-cabinetry lighting layered with ambient lighting creates a perfectly lit space.”
Indoor-Outdoor Living
Extending the interior to the outdoors is another important concept when designing luxury residences. “We want the outdoor space to feel like a natural extension of the interior, so ensuring that the flooring and tile materials flow between the interiors and exteriors is critical,” Kells shares. “Outdoor kitchens are one of the most popular elements to incorporate into the exteriors, and with such a wide variety of outdoor furnishings to select from today, there are perfect pieces for every design style.”

Hi Toll Brothers Design Team,
We recently purchased a Toll Brother Home in Gale Ranch San Ramon. I was very impressed by the Toll Brother Design team on their ability to create magic to the space which helped me to make the purchase. Now that i own a home for myself i would love to recreate the same magic in my home. Can the Toll Brothers team recommend any interior designer that helped stage the model home for us. Appreciate the help.
